Cozumel is the largest inhabited island in Mexico. It is located east of the Yucatan Peninsula, in the Caribbean Sea, and is ranked as one of the best destinations in the world for reef diving. Every year, Cozumel welcomes millions of international tourists to this island paradise, who all come looking to enjoy the luxury resorts and many attractions that Cozumel has to offer.
The island is partly surrounded by an invaluable natural wonder: the stunning coral reef that makes up part of the second largest reef system in the world. The Mesoamerican or Great Mayan Reef, as it is known, is teeming with life, featuring and abundance of tropical fish and a diversity of beautiful coral. A section of the island's reef is protected by the Cozumel National Park, in order to limit environmental and human impact on the area.
Cozumel offers a wide range of activities for individuals and families, although diving is definitely the most popular one. From certain areas of the island the reef can clearly be seen through the crystalline waters that offer visibility of more than 100 feet, showing off the fantastic parade of colorful fish and other exotic species.
Besides diving, there are plenty of ways to enjoy this fascinating place, satisfying people who are looking for adventure and those who want to relax, enjoy the calm breeze and a beautiful Caribbean sunset.
In Cozumel you can choose from all kinds of water sports, like snorkeling, parasailing, kite surfing, fishing, kayaking and jet skiing, as well as swimming with dolphins. A ride on a glass bottom boat is another fun option to enjoy the sea, without getting wet. You can also visit ancient Mayan ruins, like the ones at San Gervasio, take a stroll through the narrow streets of San Miguel or admire the exotic local wildlife in the Chankanaab National Park and the Punta Sur Ecological Reserve.
The Cozumel International Airport is located about 4 miles east of the hotel zone. It receives flights mainly from the United States, Canada and some seasonal flights from the U.K. Private transportation services are provided by some hotels upon request and usually the car rental companies offer very good deals.
An alternative way to get to Cozumel is to fly to the Cancun International Airport, drive to Playa del Carmen and take the ferry to the island.
