Whale shark

Attractions in Holbox

The main attraction of Holbox is swimming with the Whale Sharks, which happens to be the biggest fish in the world, capable of growing up to 50 feet long. This beautiful and enormous fish is pretty placid and friendly towards humans, in fact you can swim beside them and they won't get scared or attack you. The only danger for the swimmer is to maybe receive an accidental tap by its fin, but nothing to get worried about.

If you are anxious about getting bitten, don't worry, because the Whale Shark, contrary to his famously aggressive relatives, eats plankton and very small fish through a filtration system quite similar to that of a whale. They mostly get their food from the waters surface. Swimming with the Whale Shark is an unforgettable experience that you'll definitely want to repeat over and over again!

Isla Pajaros (Bird Island)

Attractions in Holbox

For fans of birdwatching, in the Yalahau lagoon, a few minutes from Holbox, you'll find Isla Pajaros (Bird Island) where you'll be able to see over 100 species of birds. Some of the birds living here are endangered species, so it's prohibited to walk on the island. But don't worry, two observation towers were built in order to avoid disturbing the birds and from here you can watch the many species approaching the island, and have amazing panoramic views at the same time. Twilight and dawn are the best times for enjoying this fabulous spectacle.

Fishermen, on the island, also catch lots of lobster and winkles, which you can purchase for really great prices.
