Huatulco Vacations

Where is Huatulco?

The wonderful bays of Huatulco are located beside Oaxaca's lush jungle, their beaches lapped by the waves of the Pacific Ocean. Huatulco is located in the southwest of the country, 172 miles from the state's capital and a little over an hour away from Mexico City by plane. The numerous beaches are all backed by spectacular mountains, which only add to the feelings of peace and tranquility that you'll experience here. The indigo blue waters are warm and steady, and the sunsets become stunning shows. These beaches are definitely some of the best attractions that Mexico has to offer its visitors.

Birth of Huatulco

Some historians say that in the 16th Century, the British pirates Sir Thomas Cavendish, Francis Drake and Thomas Pache, as well as the French pirate Le Picard, used these bays as a stop off point, before heading toward the Philippines in the Pacific Ocean. While here, they used to attack numerous Spanish ships and also take some time to relax and enjoy this tropical paradise. The structure of the bays and their fabulous natural elements, really make it a great place to vacation.

Long before the Spanish conquered Mexico, this area was part of a commercial route for the indigenous tribes. It was not until the 16th century, when the lands were conquered, that their official name was established, and even the image of Our Lady of the Pure, Clean and Immaculate Conception was adopted as the Patron Saint of Huatulco. In 1850, the governor of Oaxaca, Benito Juarez, who would later become the ''Americas Meritorious'', founded the city and called it Villa de Crespo, which would later change its name back to Huatulco.

In the nineteen seventies, while flying over this area, the bays were rediscovered by FONATUR and designated as a potential tourist destination. And in 1984, the National Fund for Tourism (FONATUR) began promoting Huatulco as a vacation destination, transforming it into what it is today, one of the most important beach destinations in the country.
