Isla Mujeres is just off the coast of Cancun, and couldn't be more different from its lively neighbor. Isla Mujeres has a much more traditional atmosphere, great for relaxation, romance and getting in touch with nature, whereas Cancun offers vibrant nightlife, luxury shopping malls and an endless variety of exciting attractions.
The fact that they are so different is actually of a great advantage for visitors to the area, because you'll have the chance to explore the best of both worlds. The trip to Isla Mujeres takes just 25 minutes on the ferry, which leaves from Puerto Juarez in Cancun, or, alternatively, you can also catch one from the Cancun Hotel Zone. So if you've already planned your vacation to Cancun, make sure you also add on a trip to Isla Mujeres to your itinerary.
Vacationers who come from large cities may be used to gridlocked traffic, deafening noise, and pollution, well, in Isla Mujeres you'll find none of the above! Most of the people here drive electric golf carts, ride scooters and bikes, or just walk. The island is less than 5 miles long and it's just 547 yards wide, so it can be easily explored from side to side. Although small, the island offers a myriad of adventures to be had and attractions to discover.
Isla Mujeres offers some of the most beautiful landscapes in the whole Mexican Caribbean, including lush vegetation, gorgeous white sandy beaches framed by palm trees, and crystal clear waters, where the tones range from turquoise to deep blue. The rugged coastline, at the Southern end of the island, is a very romantic area to relax and listen to the ocean waves as they crash against the rocks.
In downtown Isla Mujeres you can see small colorful houses built along narrow streets, invariably reminding tourists of a typical country town in Mexico. Throughout these streets you'll find multicolored handicrafts and souvenirs, along with dozens of restaurants and bars that serve from the simplest snack to the most elaborate and elegant meal. On Isla (as the island is commonly called by locals) you can also find excellent seafood, including ceviche, shrimp cocktails, and the island's specialty, Tikinxic Fish, all to be washed down with a few ice cold beers. There's also no shortage of places to go for a romantic candlelit dinner, where you'll get to enjoy a range of Caribbean and Mediterranean specialties and, of course, stunning views.
The island was once a sanctuary for Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of fertility, then a refuge for pirates of the Caribbean, and later a hideout for indigenous rebels during the Caste War. All these elements have provided Isla Mujeres, with a traditional Mexican feel which attracts thousands of travelers from around the globe. People from Italy, France, Cuba and the US have even chosen to stay here for good, contributing to the Island's unique charm.
