Fun in Isla

All along the seaside promenade of Isla Mujeres, you'll find a number of shops that cater to your every wish and desire. There are some stores that rent golf carts or motor scooters to explore the island. Others sell boat trips around the island that include swimming and stopping for lunch on a secluded beach. While some offer swimming with cat sharks or snorkeling trips to Manchones reef, the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks, or two fantastic shipwrecks submerged off the island's coast. Last but not least, there are charter companies that take you on boat trips to Isla Contoy, a protected marine area and bird sanctuary.

Next is a list of fun and exciting things to do on and off the island:

Swimming with Dolphins

Isla Mujeres features a fantastic dolphinarium managed by Dolphin Discovery, which offers visitors a series of first-hand activities with these amazing animals, from touching and petting them to shaking a fin and learning how to look after them just like their professional trainers do.

El Garrafon Park

Que Hacer en Cancun

This park features snorkeling and kayaking, as well as a spectacular view of the Caribbean Sea and the Cancun Hotel Zone. There is also zip-lining, with several platforms, including one over the sea with a stunning view of the clear blue waters of the Caribbean.

Punta Sur

Visita Cancun Mexico

This is the easternmost point in Mexico and the area that gets the first light of day in the country. Punta Sur features a seaside promenade along the coast with splendid views of the waves crashing against the rocks.

On Punta Sur there is also an open-air sculpture park with impressive sculptures by renowned Mexican artists like Sebastian, Jose Luis Cuevas, as well as other artists from all over the world. On the southern side of the island, there is a small temple erected in honor of Ixchel, a Mayan deity, whose followers would bring her various offerings, including female clay figurines, which is the reason why the Spanish called this beautiful island destination, Isla Mujeres.

Turtle Farm

The Turtle Farm's main focus is to protect the endemic wildlife of the island. Turtles come to these beaches to lay their eggs. These eggs are then transferred to special nests on the farm, to be protected until they hatch. Finally the turtles are fed and cared for until they are strong enough to be released into the wild. The farm also looks after older turtles that are sick or injured. It's a great place to visit for the whole family.

Snorkeling and Diving

Visita Cancun Mexico

There are lots of great places to go diving, such as the famous reef, called Manchones, where you can see hundreds of colorful tropical fish in their natural habitat. Divers can also see a huge underwater cross made of bronze, put there to celebrate the 140th anniversary of Isla Mujeres. There are also two incredible shipwrecks, the Ultrafreeze and a Mexican naval ship, as well as a cave for more experienced divers, and the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks, located north of the island.

The best place for snorkeling on the island is El Garrafon Park. Visitors can simply let the gentle current take them to see all kinds of friendly fish. Equipped with a mask, a snorkel, and a lifejacket, you are ready to see families of lobsters, incredibly colorful fish, as well as stingrays that look like birds taking off from the bottom of the sea.

Playa Norte

Visita Cancun Mexico

As you have seen, the southern side of the island is quite rocky, whereas Playa Norte features soft powdery white sandy beaches, perfect for basking in the sun. It is also the ideal beach for swimming, especially for families with small children, since it has a gentle current and almost no waves. Along the length of the beach, you'll find several bars located under charming open-air palapas, as well as restaurants serving deliciously fresh seafood.
