History

Loreto Mexico

Before the arrival of the Spaniards (Jesuits missionaries in the 17th century), Loreto was inhabited by groups of nomadic tribes such as Pericues, Guaycuras and Cochimies who subsisted through hunting, fishing and the harvesting of fruits and seeds.

By 1683, Eusebio Francisco Kino tried to evangelize the area of Loreto but there was a supplies shortage, which prompted him to quit his evangelizing endeavor. It wasn't until 1697 that the first mission of the Californias was founded in Loreto by the priest Juan Maria de Salvatierra.
