Surrounded by the lush Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains on one side and the wonderful Pacific Ocean on the other, Puerto Vallarta is a gorgeous vacation destination with so many things to see and do. Located on Mexico's Pacific coast in the northwest corner of the state of Jalisco, Puerto Vallarta sits on the Banderas Bay, the largest natural bay in Mexico, which consists of many small beaches settled along a coast of more than 60 miles of spectacular clean sand.
Puerto Vallarta has been transformed into a world famous resort city, which has maintained its original charm and warmness. Therefore it offers to its visitors an eclectic mix of the old and new: with picturesque colonial architecture, red tile roofs, cobblestone streets that reflect its historic past, intermingled with the modern and luxurious Puerto Vallarta.
Puerto Vallarta has a tropical climate with constantly warm temperatures around the year. There is a humid and hot wet season from June to October, with occasional rains, mostly between July and September, and a cooler and sunny dry season from November to May. There is a chance for thunderstorms in November, and hurricanes rarely hit the coast during the autumn months.
Puerto Vallarta has several district zones, each one with their own ambiance, offering their visitors an incomparable variety of attractions for their enjoyment.
Old Vallarta is where the nightlife starts and many Puerto Vallarta's landmarks are located. Here visitors can find an oceanfront walkway filled with local vendors known as El Malecon, which is considered to be the heart of the city. With the beautiful bay as a backdrop, people will also see statuary such as Los Arcos, Los Delfines and El Caballito while strolling along the Malecon.
There is also a narrow island in the middle of the Cuale River, which divides downtown. On the island, people can visit outdoor shops, beautiful riverside restaurants and the Cuale Museum. Last but not least, it is the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the most recognized landmarks of Puerto Vallarta.
Puerto Vallarta Hotel Zone is stretching from Old Vallarta to Marina Vallarta, where the major concentrations of hotels and resorts are located, along with shops, restaurants, night clubs and supermarkets. The Hotel Zone also offers many golden sand beaches along the Banderas Bay, perfect for sunbathing, swimming and a variety of water sports.
Just north of downtown and the hotel zone is Marina Vallarta, one of Mexico's most attractive and well planned marina developments and, probably, one of the most peaceful areas of Puerto Vallarta. If you are not staying in the Marina, it is definitely a great place to spend the day at least. There is nothing better than meandering along the Marina boardwalk and watching the tropical fish swim along the shore in the reflections of the white yachts against the calm water.
Marina Vallarta offers a 400 boat spaces, and it has a golf course, residential units, hotels, vacation clubs, excellent beaches, and a broad selection of restaurants and shops. There are also great activities taking place here during the year, such as The Mexican Boat Show, the International Sailfish Tournament, Fine Arts Festival, and much more. Whether you choose to frolic with the crowds or find a secluded hideaway, there is so much to see in Puerto Vallarta.
