
Tampico, aside from being one of the most important ports on the west coast of Mexico, is also one of the most populated coastal cities in the country. Tampico means ''place of the water dogs'' or ''place of otters'' in the Huasteco Tenek dialect. The city gets its name because otters are abundant in the Chairel Lagoon, and the indigenous people used to call these lovely animals water dogs. Tampico was founded on April 12, 1823 with the name of Santa Anna de Tampico, by Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, former president of Mexico.
Tampico has a very special place in the commercial history of the country. Since its founding it has been the main distribution port in northeastern Mexico, sending and receiving goods from around the world. In 1824, Tampico was officially recognized as a commercial port and in 1826 it was given the status of a city.
The first Spanish Beneficence Hospital was built in 1840, in Tampico. The city houses the oldest pharmacy in Mexico, Drogueria y Farmacias El Fenix, founded in 1871. It is also one of the cities where the aviation industry began in Mexico. On August 12th, 1924, the first flight between Mexico City and Tampico took place by Compania Mexicana de Aviacion. Interestingly, the first Coca-Cola bottling company in the country was also founded here, so Tampico nowadays, is home to one of the most important bottling companies on the planet.
The city of Tampico is located in the southern region of the state of Tamaulipas, in northern Mexico. To the north, the state borders the United States and also with the states of Nuevo Leon, Veracruz, and San Luis Potosi, in addition to being bathed in the east by the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The excellent climate, with an average temperature of 75 Fahrenheit, means that visitors can easily tour the city and its surrounding areas, year round.
The city is surrounded by water. In the southwest there are the Panuco and Tamesi rivers, in the west the Chairel and Carpintero lagoons, and to the east, the Gulf of Mexico that in fact bathes the coasts of Ciudad Madero and not Tampico. There are also numerous estuaries, lowlands and swamps, making Tampico an ideal location for water activities.
The wildlife is diverse in this region of Mexico. The Carpintero Lagoon is inhabited by crocodiles and turtles, while pelicans and ducks arrive during the winter season coming from Canada and the United States. Otters, raccoons, possums, flamingos, and herons are some of the other species found in Tampico, aside from a wide variety of fish, such as shad, sailfish, and marlin in the ocean, while in the rivers and lagoons there are snook, bass and lots more.
