Welcome to Veracruz

Welcome to Veracruz

Veracruz is no longer "the little corner where the waves make their nest", as the famous Mexican song goes. This and many other songs, sung by the late Mexican composer Agustin Lara, showed the world the true tropical soul of Veracruz. Nowadays, Veracruz is a large modern city, with the busiest cargo port in the whole of Mexico, and recently the neighboring town of Boca del Rio has also been absorbed into the city's limits. Veracruz and Boca del Rio make the perfect pair, offering visitors an exceptional place for a beach vacation, on Mexico's Gulf Coast. Veracruz and several other towns are the jewels of Sotavento, a region rich in folklore, traditions, and gastronomy.

History

Welcome to Veracruz

The historic importance of Veracruz dates back over 500 years, when the Spanish first landed here and called the area Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz. Soon after, they founded the first city and the first town hall on the American continent. Veracruz became a very important gateway to the Americas. It was here where the Spanish first introduced their language and Roman Catholic religion to the indigenous population, thus, setting the stage for the future colonization of all the Americas and ultimately making Latin America what it is today.

With the passing of time, Veracruz became the capital of Mexico on two different occasions. One time was under the administration of President Benito Juarez and the second under President Venustiano Carranza. Veracruz was the port of entry for the only emperor in the history of independent Mexico, Emperor Maximilian of Habsburg, and Veracruz was also the port of departure for the controversial president, Porfirio Diaz, when he was exiled to Europe. Many important chapters in Mexico's illustrious history have taken place in Veracruz, making it the living museum that it is today.
